This laptop is pretty loaded to start. It has Vista Home Premium, a 17" widescreen display, a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, 4GB of memory, a 320GB hard drive, an 8X slot-load, dual-layer DVD burner and wireless n for high speed wifi access.

  • Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1
  • Widescreen 17 inch display (1440x900)
  • Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 (2.00GHz/2MB cache/800MHz FSB)
  • 4 GB Dual Channel DDR2 at 800MHz
  • 320 GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
  • 8X Slot Load CD / DVD Burner (Dual Layer DVD+/-R Drive)
  • Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD
  • Intel WiFi Link 5100 802.11agn Half Mini-Card
  • High Definition Audio 2.0
  • 56 Whr Lithium Ion Battery (6 cell)
  • Jet Black Color

I would stick with the Jet Black color myself, but others may want to pay a little extra to have a different color (blue, pink, red, purple, green, orange) or even a personalized design.

I would upgrade to the P8600 2.4 GHz processor for $125. Not only is this a faster processor with more cache, it uses less power than the T6400. This means a cooler laptop and longer battery life.

Another upgrade many people would benefit from is the high resolution 1920x1200 screen from the base 1440x900 resolution for $175. This is a more than 75% increase in the number of pixels, so it allows you to have a lot more on screen at once. You can have multiple windows open at once, view high-res pictures or view full 1080p hi-def video with pixels to spare.

A fast hard drive can make a big impact on the overall speed of a notebook PC. For those that like a really fast system, upgrading the 5400 RPM hard drive to the 7200 RPM one for $50 would be a good investment.

If you play games or want to want high resolution video, you'll want to upgrade to one of the Radeon video cards. To watch Blu-Ray discs, you'll need to upgrade to the Blu-Ray combo drive.
