The starting configuration is just $1,198, so you have an extra $401 in options to add to get it up to the minimum purchase for the discount. Then $1600 - 25% off, and you are back down to $1200 again.

Here is what the Studio XPS 13 laptop is configured with by default.

  • Obsidian Black Color with Leather Accent
  • 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P7350 (3MB cache/1066Mhz FSB)
  • Windows Vista Home Premium, 64-bit
  • Microsoft Works 9.0: Spreadsheet, Word Processor and Calendar
  • Edge-to-Edge 13.3" HD WXGA LCD with 2.0 Megapixel Camera
  • 3GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1067MHz (2 Dimms)
  • 250GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive
  • Slot Load DVD-RW (DVD/CD read/write)
  • NVIDIA GeForce 9400M G
  • Dell Wireless 1510 802.11n Half Mini-Card
  • High Definition Audio 2.0
  • 2Yr Limited Hardware Warranty
  • In-Home Service after Remote Diagnosis

If you don't like black, you can switch to the Merlot Red with Leather Accent for no additional cost.

As mentioned you have $401 in options to add before the coupon applies, so you'll want to boost things up even though this laptop is pretty powerful as configured.

On upgrade is to boost the pricessor to a 2.4 GHz P8600. This is a good deal, since it is only $25 more. Another good deal is to boost the memory to 4GB of Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1067MHz for just $35.

If you are interested in XPS laptops, you probably like games or multimedia. If so, upgrading the video card to a 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 9500M is probably a good idea, and it costs $110.

Another option is switching the hard drive to a solid state drive. In case you are not aware, Solid State Drives (SSDs) use flash memory to replace the rotating platters in a normal hard drive. Not only are they silent, but they can be much faster than a tradition hard disk. In fact, many reviews state that upgradeing to an SSD is the single biggest performance improvement ever seen in a PC. Upgrading to a 128 GB SSD costs $200.

Selecting ALL of the above upgrades just puts you up to $1,568, so we stil have to add something else to get the 25% off. If you need Office software, an extra battery, or mobile broadband, those are options to consider.

I would add the Wireless 370 Bluetooth Module (2.1 with EDR), for communications with cell phones. This only costs $25, and with many cellular phones it allows for easy download of pictures wirelessly.

Since this notebook is already packed with gaming and multimedia features, you can round out the audio by improving to the Soundblaster X-Fi Hi Def Audio for $25.

All of these options brings the total to $1619.00. After the $25% off Dell coupon number, this goes down to just $1213.50.
