The minds behind the Roomba vacuum cleaner have released a new robotic assistant. Without any need for guidance beyond the initial startup, Braava dry- or wet-mops hard surfaces with microfiber cloths, then shimmies back to its starting point and powers down automatically. As it sweeps or lightly mops, the Braava pings its stationary NorthStar Navigation Cube. The cube works like an indoor GPS, creating a map of areas Braava has already covered, obstacles it’s encountered, and areas it still hasn’t cleaned. A sensor system and bumpers help it follow walls and avoid stairs or rugs, and if the cleaning cloths need to be changed anywhere in the cycle, owners simply press pause, replace the cloth, and press resume—and Braava will continue on as if you never interrupted.
